A beam is a structural element that spans horizontally between supports and carries loads while resisting bending. Beams are used in many types of construction, including bridges, balconies, and buildings.
There are several types of beams, including:
Cantilever beam
Supported at one end and free to rotate at the other, cantilever beams are often used in bridges and balconies. They can support heavy loads and are typically attached to a wall or column at the fixed end.
Simply supported beam
Supported at both ends but free to rotate, simply supported beams have no moment resistance.
Fixed beam
Also known as a built-in or encased beam, fixed beams are attached or integrated into walls at both ends. They are often used in large buildings and multi-span bridges.
Overhanging beam
A combination of a simply supported beam and one or two cantilever beams, overhanging beams extend beyond their supports.
Continuous beam
A static system that spans over multiple supports, continuous beams are often used for long spans. They are made up of two or more simple beams connected in a row.
